Reopening Cup of Joe

Liv Brusatti, Senior Staff Writer

Much to the dismay of students, Cup of Joe did not open for the 2020-2021 school year due to COVID-19 restrictions. But, after a year and a half of waiting, Cup of Joe debuted this school year, opening its doors on Monday morning, August 23, 2021.

Cup of Joe is a student-run organization that provides coffee drinks, smoothies, and frappes for SJA students to purchase before and after school. The profits made from sales benefit a different student-chosen nonprofit each year. Established in 2016, the coffee shop is a beloved part of school life, and everyone is excited to see it back, especially the freshmen, who historically make up most of the coffee shop’s customers.

This year, Cup of Joe’s manager is senior Amanda Malin.

, “I’m excited we are able to reopen,” Amanda said.  “It’s a part of St. Joe that brings all of the girls, faculty, and staff together as a community.”

Cup of Joe has both classic coffee drinks, like Caffè Americanos, and more trendy versions, like flavored lattes and modern macchiatos. For those who aren’t coffee drinkers, Cup of Joe offers chai tea lattes, frappes, and smoothies. This year, the staff of Cup of Joe decided to create a ‘Barista’s Choice’ drink, which is a special, off the menu drink. The first ‘Barista’s Choice’ was a turtle frappe, which is a mixture of caramel and java chip frappes, topped with whipped cream, and drizzled with caramel and chocolate syrups.

“The anticipation is killing me!” sophomore Lucy Dobslaw said while waiting for her drink.

While everyone is thrilled to welcome back Cup of Joe, the workers may be even more excited than the customers. The student workers gain leadership and time management skills, and can learn to better deal with stressful situations, and, not to mention, a free drink is earned per shift worked. Working Cup of Joe also allows for connections with classmates and peers in other grades, both through working with them and through taking their orders. Senior Grace Bradley missed it during COVID.

“I’m very excited. Cup of Joe is probably my favorite thing to participate in at St. Joe. I’m excited to see what’s in store for this year,” senior Cup of Joe employee, Grace said.

Cup of Joe welcomes everyone to stop by between 7:15 and 8:00 am or 2:50 and 3:50 pm. If you’re not sure what to get, ask a barista for their recommendation or, maybe, even try a ‘Barista’s Choice’ drink.
