Preparing for the New Year

Technology is a modern necessity, but it is important to take time away from a screen.

2020 has been a chaotic, challenging, and completely unforgettable year. With a global pandemic overtaking our lives, no one goes anywhere without a mask. With the death of George Floyd, racial inequality has been publicly recognized. Within politics, not only does the White House hold of a new President, but also a new Supreme Court Justice was appointed. Announcing that the world change occurred during 2020 is an understatement, but how much did you change- for better or for worse during 2020? Personal goals and changes around the New Year can help progress not only your personal self, but also influence those around you to take action in their lives and make themselves better.

Foremost, it is important to recognize that a New Year is not going to simply allow COVID-19 to suddenly disappear. While advances with the pandemic have taken place, it is important to continue to enforce safe and healthy practices. Regular hand sanitation, consistent mask usage, and social distancing when possible will be the best way to truly terminate this pandemic within 2021.

Additionally, technological usage has increased tremendously in order to avoid in-person contact. While the intent of greater technology usage is positive, there is such a thing as too much technology. Constantly staring at a screen is unhealthy for your eyes, and it is important to go outside and get some fresh air; essentially, spend some time away from technology. Whether that involves reading outdoors, taking a walk, building a snowman (depending on the weather), or simply just looking at the beauty of creation, spending time away from technology is necessary for proper health and happiness. 

“I have trouble staring at Zoom all day whenever I go to school virtually, so getting outdoors allows me to relax and get away from a confined space and environment,” senior Lauren DeGrand said.

Lastly, setting goals during an uncertain time can dramatically help improve self-efficiency and motivation. It is important to keep yourself busy and occupied, and by setting goals, the new year can help you start to become your best self. These goals do not need to be dramatic. Simply reading for 10 minutes a day, exercising 3 times a week, drinking more water, or talking to family more can be a great way to help improve your mentality and outlook on life. Even though social outings are restricted, social and in-person connections and conversations are vital for happiness, so it is important to remember to talk to your family and those you live with.

“To be honest, I talked to my parents a lot more than usual during quarantine last year, and it has continued. Since I could not see anyone, I talked to my parents quite often, and it is definitely something positive I got out of 2020 and hope to continue during 2021,” senior Grace Kertz reflected.

Altogether, 2020 may not have been the most preferable and socially exciting year. However, this year has definitely taught us about uncertainty, along with the importance of self-reliability. Productivity depended entirely on oneself this year, as school work was virtual. There are never any promises or certainty regarding the future, but every individual can make the most of each situation, and in this case, make the most out of 2021.
