Everything You Need to Know About the Musical: Audition Tips, Tricks, and Information
August 20, 2019
St. Joe is full of different clubs and after-school activities you can become a part of. One well-loved SJA tradition is the fall musical. This year’s show is Chicago!
An informational meeting was held on Friday, August 16 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the theater. Here, students received papers that gave information about the show. These papers included the cast and parent contract, saying “Yes! I can do this show!”
On Sunday, August 18, also in the theater, there was a dance class held from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. Guest choreographer, Joe Elvis Alway-Baker, taught his choreography of All That Jazz. Again, this class is not required, but it was super fun (and could help during the dance audition).
Auditions for the show are on Mon., August 19 from 3:00 to 5:30 p.m. Usually, there will be a paper where you can sign up for your singing order. Each student will go into the theater one at a time and sing for the castors, Mrs. Albes, Mr. Kowalzyk, and Ms. Tipton. After the vocal auditions, the dance audition will begin. First, Ms. Tipton will teach a selected segment of dance. Then, auditioners will perform the piece in small groups.
Callbacks are the next day from 3:00 to 5:30 p.m., but if you do not get a callback don’t worry! Callbacks don’t mean you will be cast. Make sure to breathe before every audition and remember that you’ve got this! Mrs. Albes, Mr. Kowalzyk, and Ms. Tipton won’t judge you or be mean. The castors and fellow students all want you to succeed, so just have fun. Everyone always sounds amazing, and it is always hard for them to make casting decisions. The musical is a great way to get involved and meet both upper and lower classmen!
