On February 10, Latin students gathered at St. Louis University High School for a Latin Scholar Bowl trivia (certamen) competition. St. Joe took members of the Latin Honor Society to participate in this fun event. Schools from all over St. Louis came to join the fantastic St. Joe Angels including Chaminade, MICDS, John Burroughs, Cor Jesu, and SLUH.  This was the first Latin trivia competition since before Covid.

The countdown to the long-awaited match started well before the 3:15 start time.  Senior Grace Zolla, Latin Honor Society President, was unable to attend.

“I was very confident that my classmates would do amazing. I was so sad I couldn’t be there, but the SJA Latin girls rocked this,” Grace said.

These St. Joe Angels had been in Latin mode all day preparing for this competition.  Senior Latin 4 students Emma Jaskewitz and Ava Kasman practiced Quizlet questions all morning.

During the Latin team’s last practice they day had a good luck charm: Angel, the wonderful auction puppy.

Class President Jane Mortland participated.

“The competition was actually way more fun than I thought.  I would definitely participate again!” Jane said.

The Angels competed against the AP Latin class at Chaminade.  While St. Joe kept it close in the beginning, even winning, they fell quite short in the end with a score of 5 to 16.

Even after the tough loss, coach and Latin teacher Domina Hannah Decker was still proud of her team.

“ No matter the outcome, I am still proud of my Angels.  We took notes at the competition and are going to practice and keep improving for the next competitions in the future,” Ms. Decker said.

The St. Joe students are now back in the classroom and preparing for more competitions!
