Gloria Steinem is an American feminist, journalist, social activist, writer and lecturer. She was one of the first U.S. feminist leaders and has become one of the most prominent leaders of the feminist movement, while campaigning for women’s rights and civil rights. Steinem has developed a new look at feminism and has been an advocate for all women, in America and around the world.

Steinem was born March 25, 1934 in Ohio. She graduated from Smith College in 1956 and continued her studies for a fellowship in India. Steinem became a freelance journalist in New York and was involved in creating New York Magazine. In 1972, Steinem and other feminist leaders created the first feminist magazine, Ms.

Over the years, Steinem has written six books, four awarded as best-sellers, including My Life on the Road, a biography about how her early life helped shape her life.

Steinem uses her voice and beliefs to create a strong feminist platform for women. She has been honored for her work many times, including being inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame and receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Barack Obama. She has created and been a part of different organizations for women, including the Ms. Foundation for Women. Steinem fights for equal rights for all people, especially equal pay and opportunity for women.

With Steinem’s ability to lead a crowd, she encourages the American people to use the power that they have to make changes and to stand up for what they believe. Known as someone who cannot sit still or stop planning, Steinem will not settle or stop fighting for social justice until the day she dies.

Ms. Ann Hammer, Diversity coordinator and theology teacher, sees Steinem’s work as vital to the feminist movement. Hammer believes that Steinem encourages people to not live divided, and instead, work in unison to create an equal platform for all.

“Over the years, Gloria Steinem’s work has given women the courage to raise their voices for equity for all people,” Hammer said. “In addition, her work has taught men that the feminist movement is just as much about ensuring they flourish as it is about women flourishing.”
